A hysterectomy is an operation to remove a woman’s uterus. The uterus is the place where a baby grows when a woman is pregnant. Sometimes, the ovaries and fallopian tubes also are taken out. Hysterectomies are very common.
Your doctor might recommend a hysterectomy if you have
Fibroids
Endometriosis not cured by medicine or surgery
Uterine prolapse – when the uterus drops into the vagina
Cancer of the uterus, cervix, or ovaries
Vaginal bleeding that persists despite treatment
Chronic pelvic pain; surgery can be a last resort
Before having a hysterectomy, it is important to discuss other possible treatments with your health care provider. A hysterectomy will stop your periods, and you will no longer be able to get pregnant. If the surgery removes both ovaries, you will enter menopause.
There are 3 types of hysterectomy:
Abdominal
Abdominal hysterectomy is a surgical procedure in which the uterus is removed through an incision in the lower abdomen. One or both ovaries and fallopian tubes may also be removed during the procedure
Laparoscopic
Laparoscopically assisted vaginal hysterectomy (LAVH) is a surgical procedure using a laparoscope to guide the removal of the uterus and/or Fallopian tubes and ovaries through the vagina (birth canal). (A different procedure, called a laparoscopic hysterectomy, is entirely performed using a laparoscope and other instruments inserted through tiny abdominal incisions, and the uterus, Fallopian tubes etc. are removed in tiny portions.) Not all hysterectomies can or should be done by LAVH. In certain situations, a laparoscopic hysterectomy may be sufficient. In other cases, an abdominal hysterectomy or a vaginal hysterectomy (without laparoscopy) is indicated. The surgeon determines the appropriate procedure for each individual case based upon the reason for the hysterectomy and the medical history and condition of the patient.
Vaginal
Vaginal hysterectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the uterus through the vagina. Vaginal hysterectomy involves a shorter time in the hospital, lower cost and faster recovery than does the most common alternative, abdominal hysterectomy. However, if your uterus is enlarged, vaginal hysterectomy may not be possible.

Tubectomy also referred to, as Tubal Sterilization is a surgical procedure done on women as a permanent method of contraception. Gynaecologists, general surgeons and laparoscopic surgeons perform tubectomy.
The Fallopian Tubes are two in number and are attached on either side of the uterus at one end and the other end is open in the abdomen. The length of each Fallopian tube is about 10cm. When the ovum or egg is released from the ovary, it is picked up by Fallopian tube through which it moves into the uterus.
If sperms are present in the Fallopian tubes, the ovum is fertilized and the resulting embryo is transmitted to the uterus where it is embedded. In short, it could be said that Fallopian tubes are channels through which the eggs from the ovaries travel to the uterus. In tubectomy, the tubes are blocked or divided to prevent the eggs from entering the uterus. This prevents any future pregnancies to occur after the surgical procedure.

The procedure usually takes about 1-2 hours under general anaesthetic and involves precise surgery. The fallopian tubes have very small internal openings and are best seen using magnification. This enables the surgeon to join the tubes together accurately using delicate stitches to give the best possible results. You should be able to get back to normal activities within a month.
